HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE SCHOOL

Govt. Vocational Higher Secondary School, Njekkad was established as a Lower Primary School in 1915 near Varkala which was Sanctified by the footprints of the social reformer Sree Narayana Gurudevan. The School started functioning in a thatched shed and its land was donated by Kodiyattumadam. Under the leadership of late freedom fighter Mr. K. Velayudhan Pillai, Mr. Karuveetil Gopala Krishna Pillai and Mr. Velayudhan Muthalali, public contributions were collected. In the same manner upper primary classes were started. With continuous public effort the school was upgraded as a High school in 1957. Thus the natives got an opportunity to get educated in the nearest place. It was a great boon to the natives who had gone to distant places like Navaikulam, Sivagiri etc for their high school education. In 1961 the lower primary level was bifurcated.

The details of the first Student or the Headmaster is not available. In the history of the school former headmasters like Neelamperoor Ramakrishnan Nair and Neelakanta Varrior are not forgetable. For a long period, the school was run in sessional system. Government built a multi-storied building because of the perseverance of the public and the furniture was donated by the native people. As a result the regular classes started during 1992-93 and thus the shift system came to an end. The mini stadium was constructed in 1985 under the sincere effort of the physical education teacher of this school Sri. Ramachandrakurup.

EMINENT PERSONALITIES

The school produced so many noble personalities. One of them is Dr. Manidas who achieved several fellowships, is working in Health Department in U.K. He is a visiting proffessor in various European Universities. Sri. Kapil Dev, the Captain of Indian Volleyball team because of his genuine playstyle was a former student who learned the basic lessons of volleyball in the playground of this school. Sri Manampoor RajanBabu, a prolific Writer in Malayalam Literature proved his creative abilities while studying in the school. Likewise the school gave birth to several social cultural and political personalities

THE MILESTONES IN THE DEVELOPMENT

The school has succeeded in giving its own contributions to the changing educational vision. Even before the establishment of computer labs in other schools in the district, our school has set up a computer lab with the help of P.T.A. It was later developed with the support of the people representatives. Govt. V.H.S.S. Njekkad has emerged as a greater figure in Attingal Education District because of the hardwork of the P.T.A., People representatives and natives. Nowadays we can see English medium schools like mushrooms.

Yet in these circumstances this school stands apart with increasing divisions. During 1990-91 academic year vocational Higher Secondary Section was also started. The different courses included are M.R.R.T.V., E.C.G. and Audio Metric Technician.

THE PRESENT STATUS

The School always gained greater achievements in curricular and co-curricular activities. It is a prestigious matter that even as a village school, our school has gained 12th and 13th ranks respectively in 2002 S.S.L.C. Examination and 14th rank in the 2003 Examination. The School stands first in co-curricular activities also. The School has been moulding Shining Stars of athletics and it is again and again standing prominent in the same place as overall champions in this educational district for years. Another remarkable event is that our students participated in National School games. The school has got so many fantastic accomplishments in sub district Youth festival in 2004 and 2006, the school also won the overall trophy in ‘Samskritholsavam’. The “Guide” is also functioning very well. Another incredible factor is that the students who received “Rashtrapathi” and “Rajya Puraskar Badge” are studying here. “First Kerala battalion N.C.C.” is functioning effectively. The N.S.S. Unit is also functioning smoothly in the Vocational Higher Secondary.

NOVEL IDEAS IMPLEMENTED

The school has organised so many activities based on the new educational philosophy and ideology. The school has put forward special packages for the upliftment of the educational level of students for increasing the percentage of S.S.L.C. Examination results and put them into practice. Remedial teaching is conducted for the primary and high school students from 4.00 p.m to 5.00 p.m. Likewise YOGA classes are conducted on every Tuesday and Thursday. Multi level activities are conducted for students. A good percentage of students are economically backward. The P.T.A. is always conscious in providing free uniforms and other facilities for the students.

The Government V.H.S.S. Njekkad is a golden star among other schools because of the collective effort of the efficient and sincere teachers, competent P.T.A. , honourable people representatives and after all the committed public.
